Rhode Island Red Japanese Maple A hardy and reliable compact red maple. 'Rhode Island Red' emerges with bright red leaves that mature to a rich burgundy and hold their color well throughout the summer. Fall color is a dependable, brilliant scarlet. It forms a dense, relatively low, spreading mound, making it a great alternative to larger red maples in smaller spaces.
